Basis for Recommendation

To date, only one near miss Signal Passed At Danger (SPAD) event has been reported within IÉ, despite a number of drivers indicating to the RAIU that they have been involved in near miss SPAD events. Drivers should be able to report near misses without the fear of sanctions, as a result, the RAIU make the following safety recommendation:

Recommendation

Iarnród Éireann (Railway Undertaking) should introduce a near miss reporting system, whereby, drivers may report near misses without the fear of sanctions being imposed.
