Legislation applicable to the Railway Accident Investigation Unit

The RAIU conducts investigations under the provision of Statutory Instrument No. 430 of 2020, European Union (Railway Safety) (Reporting and investigation of serious accidents, accidents and incidents) Regulations 2020.

  • Railway Safety Act 2005 (No. 31 of 2005), as amended;
  • Railway Safety (Reporting and Investigation of Serious Accidents, Accidents and Incidents Involving Certain Railways) Act 2020 (No. 18 of 2020);
  • Directive (EU) 2016/798 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 11 May 2016 on railway safety (recast);
  • Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2020/572 of 24 April 2020 on the reporting structure to be followed for railway accident and incident investigation reports;
  • Directive (EU) 2016/797 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 11 May 2016 on the interoperability of the rail system within the European Union.
